Recreation plays a pivotal role in the development of children, shaping not only their interests but also their identities and aspirations. Engaging in recreational activities provides kids with opportunities to explore different hobbies, interests, and talents. From sports to arts and crafts, from music to outdoor adventures, recreation exposes children to a diverse array of experiences that help them discover what they enjoy and what they excel at.

Through recreation, children learn valuable life skills such as teamwork, discipline, resilience, and problem-solving. Whether they're participating in team sports, joining a church group, or attending summer camps, kids learn to navigate social interactions, communicate effectively, and work collaboratively towards common goals. These experiences lay the groundwork for building healthy relationships and developing a strong sense of self-confidence and self-esteem. They also get to know coaches and leaders and may aspire to do that when they are older. Recreational activities stimulate their minds and fuel their curiosity. This process of exploration and experimentation not only sparks joy and excitement but also helps children develop critical thinking skills and problem-solving abilities that are essential for success in school and beyond. It also provides children with a sense of freedom and autonomy, allowing them to make choices and take risks in a safe and supportive environment. Whether they're choosing which activity to participate in, setting personal goals, or overcoming challenges, children learn to trust their instincts and take ownership of their decisions.

In essence, recreation is not just about having fun; it's about nurturing the holistic development of children and helping them become resilient, creative, and well-rounded individuals. By providing opportunities for kids to explore their interests, develop their talents, and connect with others, recreation plays a vital role in shaping who they are and who they will become. As parents and caregivers, it's essential to prioritize recreation as an integral part of children's lives, recognizing its profound impact on their physical, emotional, and social well-being.

Yes, it takes time and money. The great thing about fostering is that the government will pay for kids recreational ventures and camps. As a foster parent it is you sitting with computers at a table at 7am when the enrolment starts, trying to be the first in so your kids get the spots available.  Then there is the uniform, equipment, drives and waiting time…..all to find out after two sessions that they don’t wan to go anymore. Welcome to parenting!
